In our initial consultation, I normally discuss with the bride and groom the option of adding a pre-engagement shoot to the photography package. The purpose of a pre-engagement shoot is for the couple to feel comfortable in front of the camera. They can see how the photographer works, gives directions and the images he's trying to capture. It's about building trust between the photographer and the couple.
In most cases, the couple starts out nervous as they don't know what to expect. By the end of the shoot, there's plenty of laughter, poses, and happy beautiful natural shots. And that's exactly what I aim for. The benefit of this exercise is for me is to get to know the couple. By the end of the shoot, I learn the type of couple they are and what they feel comfortable doing.
Selecting a location is the most important part of getting the best possible photo shoot. Normally I like to do a shoot where the couple has spent time together previously and have very happy fond memories of a certain place. Could be a location where they first met, the place where he proposed, any locations which will bring plenty of emotions. I do recommend to any couple to think about pre-engagement photos when choosing the package. If you're doing a Sydney or a Gold Coast wedding make sure to try out the pre-engagement shoot because it's fun on top of being a trust building exercise which you won't regret doing.
